Delhi Capitals – Once known as Delhi Daredevils, this team is now co-owned by JSW and the GMR Group. To be honest, they haven’t been one of the strongest teams in the Indian Premier League. Even though they topped the league stage twice, they’ve never made it to the finals.
Their best performance in any IPL season is a third-place finish, which happened in 2009, 2012, 2019, and 2021. The fearless Virender Sehwag was the face of the team and its captain for the first two seasons. Later, he passed the captaincy to another Delhi player and his opening partner, Gautam Gambhir.
The first season of the Indian Premier League was quite a rollercoaster for them. They managed to strike a balance between wins and losses, making it to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, they couldn’t go further, losing to the Rajasthan Royals, who eventually won the finals and took home the title.
Report on Players Acquired in the Delhi Capitals Auction:
In the upcoming IPL 2009 season, Delhi showcased an impressive performance, clinching the top spot in the league stage. A formidable lineup featuring AB de Villiers, Sehwag, and Gambhir, coupled with the spin expertise of Daniel Vettori and Amit Mishra, allowed Delhi to secure victories convincingly and surprise their opponents. However, their journey took a familiar turn as they stumbled in the semi-finals, prolonging their quest for an IPL title.
The team faced a challenging period, finishing at the bottom in IPL 2011 and claiming the 5th spot in the 2010 season. Undeterred, Delhi Capitals bounced back vigorously in the 2012 Indian Premier League. Once again dominating the league stage, surpassing formidable teams like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, they owed their success to the exemplary batting skills of Kevin Pietersen, Mahela Jayawardene, and Ross Taylor.
Despite being strong contenders for the title, Delhi Capitals couldn’t break their pattern of stumbling at the crucial juncture. For the third time, they fell short of reaching the finals, settling for a 3rd-place finish when the season concluded.
The DC franchise is better off forgotten
After the 2012 season, Delhi Capitals experienced a prolonged slump, failing to make it to the playoffs for six consecutive seasons. Their standings during this period were 9th, 8th, 7th, 6th, 6th, and 8th, respectively, from IPL 2013 to IPL 2018. Eager to turn the page on this forgettable era, the Delhi franchise underwent a major overhaul in 2014, completely revamping the team in the auctions by not retaining a single player. Unfortunately, this move did not yield the desired results, drawing criticism from fans for their consistently poor performance.
Prior to the auctions for the twelfth season of the Indian Premier League, Delhi opted to retain 14 players while parting ways with the Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan. Notable acquisitions included Colin Ingram, Ishant Sharma, and Keemo Paul, alongside Axar Patel, Sherfane Rutherford, and the versatile Hanuma Vihari. Leading up to IPL 2023, Delhi Capitals’ decision to bring on board former Indian Captain Sourav Ganguly as their official advisor proved to be a positive change compared to their lackluster performances in the preceding six seasons.
Delhi Capitals (DC) Season 16:
In the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League, Delhi Capitals broke a long-standing streak by reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2012, securing a commendable third position in the league stage. The playoff journey began on a positive note with a victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, their aspirations were dashed in the subsequent match against the consistently formidable Chennai Super Kings, resulting in an unexpected exit. Once again, the dream of claiming the IPL championship slipped away.
Despite the freshness of the 2023 season, the objective remains the same for Delhi Capitals—to be crowned IPL champions. The addition of strategic genius Ravichandran Ashwin to their coaching staff adds a new dimension. Will the inclusion of powerhouse players like Shimron Hetmyer turn the tides in their favor, or will Delhi Capitals have to endure a prolonged wait? The question lingers, and fans await eagerly to see what unfolds in this IPL season. Hope remains high, and the anticipation builds as we wait to discover what Delhi Capitals has in store for cricket enthusiasts.
